Completed on 30 January 1826, designed by Thomas Telford, the Menai Bridge was a triumph of civil engineering – the biggest suspension bridge in the world at the time. The bridge needed to have 100 feet of clear space under the main span to allow for the passage of the tall sailing ships that sailed the straits. This was done by designing a suspension bridge, with sixteen massive chains holding up a 176m (579 foot) length of road surface between the two towers. The chains each measured 522.3 metres (1,714 ft) and weighed 121 tons overall - the central section of chain, weighing 23.5 tons had to be lifted up from rafts. Although small suspension bridges had been built before, none of them was anywhere near the scale of this one.
