The Alcazar opened in 1923 as a luxury residence hotel and hosted many famous visitors to the Sixth City, including Cole Porter, George Gershwin, Mary Martin, Bob Hope, Jack Benny, Lupe Velez, and Johnny Weissmueller. It was built in the Spanish-Moorish style, a rare site in Greater Cleveland. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1979 and is part of Cleveland Heights' Cedar-Fairmount Historic District, which is dominated mostly by Tudor-style architecture. In spite of many years of financial troubles, the hotel still maintains a great deal of it's original beauty, and now functions as a bed & breakfast, extended stay suites, and retirement residences.
